When it comes to building or renovating everyone starts in the same place, with inspiration and a vision. Creating a mood board, finding the feeling and searching for those key pieces that pull everything together. One of the biggest comments we hear when discussing lighting is “I love this but it’s a little out of my budget”. So, we sat down and curated our Accessible Luxury collection.
Our Accessible Luxury Collection is comprised of products with a clear and well-rounded design aesthetic, positioned to be obtainable to various budgets.
These pieces exude opulence and exceed expectations through their style, use of quality materials and price point. Their elegant forms make them suitable for all design styles.
We have a few tips & tricks to consider if you are on a strict budget but still want to make an impact on your lighting plan and give your space the mood and feel it deserves just as it did in your initial inspiration and dream.
2. Not All Kitchens Need Pendants
Its ok to not put pendants lights over your island bench. Rather than opting for x3 pendants perhaps look at incorporating a feature wall light or two and then adding a large vase with greenery on your island as the statement? This is an easy way to reduce the cost of lighting in a space but still make a huge impact on the area.
3. Over Lighting
Over lighting is very common on lighting plans these days and is one of the biggest things to look at when budget is in mind. Do you really need x4 downlights over your dining table and a pendant light aswell? This is all dependant on the type of pendant that you are selecting and the other elements in your area.
4. Layering
Layering your lighting is essential to create ambience and set the scene depending on your mood and feel for the time.
Incorporating a mix of overhead lighting paired with wall lights and a lamp is a great way to create an atmosphere and can be achieved even on the tightest of budgets. For instance, a single floor lamp can produce enough light to illuminate a bedroom sufficiently without using overhead lighting, you just need to choose the right floor lamp to do the job!

No Matter how big or how small, there is always enough room to add in a lamp! Here at Lighting Collective, we ‘LOVE LAMP” and for more reasons than one! Lamps are the final piece of the puzzle, the perfect dollop of cream, the exact pinch of salt to your meal, the full stop at the end of your essay. Basically, what we are trying to say is that your room is not complete without the perfect lamp to finish it off!
Incorporating a lamp is a great way to create task and ambient lighting and lighten the mood in your space. As I’m sure you have heard time and time again to get the perfect lighting plan you need to layer your lighting. To do this you need to assess the space at hand and think about how you will use the area and the different atmospheres you wish to create. Below are a few of our favourite styles/tips to choose the perfect lamp for all the right reasons!
The easiest way to incorporate ambient lighting in your home is by utilising the humble floor lamp.
Whether you are renting with limited say on the lighting or you just love to change your lighting with your mood, the floor lamp has you covered. Not only can you manipulate the light source to your emotions. An easy way to do this is by adding in a smart globe which give you the opportunity to dim, change colour tones, and set scenes in your home to slowly dim your lights and colour temperature as the night ages to help prepare the body for rest.
Whether you work or study from home, are an avid novelist or just need to wind down after the day is done, task lighting with the use of a table lamp will be ideal for you. With the current climate of “work from home” it has never been more important to invest in a lamp for your study/workspace. Having the right amount of illumination in your workspace aids productivity and reduces strain on the eyes. I am a big advocate for indirect lighting as it reduces glare and gives an even spread of light without any harsh direct beams. An uplighter lamp if best for this so I would always recommend looking for something adjustable in a study space that you can angle when a more direct light source is required but then adjust away for a softer general light source.
One of the biggest questions we get when it comes to the bedroom is should you pair your bedside lamps or is it ok to mix and match? I can assure you that it is completely ok to mix and match! The best way to do this would be to use two different lamps that create a different feel. To keep things aesthetic, I would recommend something that is small and a more of a soft glow that can be easily styled by some books or a candle with the other lamp maybe being slightly larger and more light emitting. Another way to do this is to have just a single bedside lamp and then a floor lamp in a far corner. This option gives you another element to layer your light!
Finally the most common question popping up in today’s lighting conversations is tech, and more specifically smart lighting! Should I add smart lighting to my lamp?
If you are happy with just a standard turn off and turn on lamp then this might not be for you however, if you like to dabble in the latest tech and trends then I say 100% yes, lets get smart!
Its so easy to add the element of smart lighting in your home with a lamp as all you need is a smart phone or tablet and a smart globe. There are so many on the market with all different options to look into but having the ability to turn on/off, dim, change colour temperature are the most import to consider when looking at smart globes. My favourite option is the ability to turn my lights on and off from any room in my house or even while I am away on holiday. This gives so much flexibility and always creates illumination in your home without the dreaded dark walk to your bedroom at night.
All in all, everyone needs a lamp and there is the perfect lamp just waiting for you!

Picture this? You have just moved into your forever home, as you enter, theres a grand stair case and wide-open space for miles, well meters. Your brain bursting with possibilities and projects, you start to envisage a large feature light that will take the breath away from your guests (and the post man) The possibilities are endless but how to choose the perfect light?
This blog is here to help you manoeuvre around the things you need to consider when selecting that perfect statement piece!
The first thing to consider is the space on hand. What is the size of the void ? If you are building or renovating use your floor plan and elevations to determine the dimensions and height. If you don’t have plans invest in a laser measure, it will save you the head ache of balancing a tape measure in thin air. This information is imperative to know and will be the first question asked by our team when helping you with your selections.
Once you have determined the size of the space the next thing to consider is the ceiling type.
Knowing what type of ceiling you have is imperative as this can greatly effect the type of fitting that can be used in the space and how your desired look can be achieved.
I have listed below a checklist of questions to consider when preparing for your lighting selection.
What size is the void ?
What is the overall height from the floor to ceiling, and wall to wall?
What type of ceiling is in the void space?
-Flat, raked, gyprock, cement, timber truss, ect.
Can this ceiling space be accessed for additional wiring?
- some designs may require additional wiring, it is best to have your electrician check if the space is accessible for this prior to your lighting selection.
Will you need additional support in the ceiling?
- This is dependent on the type of fitting that is selected however if it is quite heavy IT is recommended to add additional noggins or support beams if required.
Suspension? To determine the appropriate suspension length depends on what is below and surrounding the void space . i.e
-Stairwell – is it to sit above a landing ?
-Dining table – would you like the void fitting to cascade down the void to be visible above the dining table ?
-Living room – will this be the main source of light in the space
The best way to help us advise on these aspect is to provide any building plans, elevations or images of the area.
light output?
-Will this fitting be the main source of light in the area?
Switching?
-Do you require to have this fitting on a two way switch?
Wind?
-This is an important point to consider, will the area on hand receive high level of wind passing through? If so the material of the feature lights needs to be considered so that it can be stable enough to avoid blowing around and potentially breaking.
Once all the prep work has been looked into and all considerations made it is now time for the fun stuff, what is the perfect light for you?
The next step is to decide what style you are after and the placement? There are endless options and placements to choose from when looking at a large open area, some of these could be either one single statement piece, a cluster, an intricate design or layering etc?? If you are needing some inspiration on this, jump over to our Instagram page or better yet a blog that we have prepared earlier for you!
Types of voids and how to fill them
To make things even easier, we have created a new collection with our favorite pieces.
Our void collection incorporates a blend of large statement pendants and chandeliers along with smaller delicate pieces which coupled together create the perfect statement cluster or design. This collection has been curated to highlight the larger and more grandeur pieces that will evoke drama in a larger space and also to focus in on the arrangements of smaller pieces in a mix of materials and textures with the freedom to explore intricate and creative design applications.
Scandinavian style is characterised by simplicity, minimalism and functionality with an emphasis on clean lines and simple furnishings that are functional, timeless and cozy.
Creating a Scandinavian inspired space is all about the philosophy of not too much, not too little: just right. This is characterised as a minimalistic style that uses a blend of warming textures and soft hues. Placing an emphasis on natural light, creating bright and airy open spaces. The style tends to see spaces with white walls and neutral colour pallets along with natural textures such as wood and stone. Modernist Scandinavian designs favoured timbers in teak, rosewood, birch and ash, but birch, maple, light oak and pine.
Soft furnishing will often be of natural fabrics with loose-weave textures such as linen and cotton. This style also doesn’t shy away from furs and chunky woven textures.
Scandinavian homes are designed so that neutral and calm hues dominate the colour palette. There is often pops of accent colours incorporated such as, Forest Green, Burnt Orange, Pale blue, dusty pink and many different shades of grey.
We have created a Scandinavian collection that encompasses a carefully curated selection of fittings that exude the characteristics of quintessential Nordic designs. Exploring a mix of textures, shapes, and colour, this collection enhances a modern minimalistic approach through soft tonal colours, and sleek materials to create a versatile collection to compliment the Hygge in any space.
Hygge: is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment. It is about enjoying togetherness with the people who matter.

Mid- Century Modern is a style you have no doubt heard thrown around before, but what is this seemingly effortless and timeless style all about?
It is a total push against the stuffiness and structure of earlier interior design and architecture. It wraps up Post World War II practicality, 50’s era optimism, 60’s era earthiness, and 70’s era tones and textures all into one neat little Scandinavian inspired package.
It is fresh with a clean, minimal aesthetic and open panning where form follows function. There is a common emphasis on an inside/outside connection and spaces adorned with the juxtaposition of organic and geometric forms.
Many of the design world's most iconic chairs, fabrics and even light fittings were designed with these principals in mind and within this era.
The colour pallet is often raw and clean with pops of primary colours. There is ever present use of materials in their raw form and celebration of texture.
Our Mid Century Modern collection highlights classic Mid Century period pieces as well as new Mid Century Modern inspired designs. Focusing on organic and geometric shapes, mixed materials and textures, bold colours and metals creating functional design pieces with a timeless Mid Century lighting look.

Eclectic style is all about having fun and expressing your personality while creating a space with the objects you love. It is the ultimate celebration and collaboration of all interior styles and design periods. Eclectic style requires confidence in your design style and personality while keeping within the confines of good design principals. There is a fine line between contrast and chaos.
It is the contrast that makes these interiors work so well. Whether it be between the old and new, patterns and textures or even something as simple as colours it adds a depth of playfulness and energy to every space.
For eclectic style to really be present a space should feel disjointed and a little chaotic, a successful decor scheme should feel unified, with every design decision being a very deliberate one. There are a few key things to remember, pick a colour palette, balance bold choices with a neutral and don’t over crowd spaces.
Choosing a series of core colours to compliment your eclectic design is a great starting point and will double as a guide to help you edit and hone a creating a cohesive look.
We suggest you choose one neutral hue and one accent colour to get started. Using a calming neutral throughout will allow for a smart base colour to layer over, and prevent the room from feeling a tad too overbearing.
That neutral will work wonders alongside your chosen accent colour especially when applied to different aspects of a room to create a harmonious space instead of a mismatched and erratic one. As you go along add too and expand your core eclectic style palette by starting off with two classic tones for a studied yet nuanced take on eclectic home decor.
Have fun with texture it will help bring the look to life. Contrast textures against one another for that distinct eclectic look.
Our Artistic and Eclectic collection combines the simplicity of Art aesthetics in modern, complex lighting structures. A beautifully curated Collection, these lights have been designed with the taste of opulence. The perfect mix of textures, shapes, and colour, this collection is imbued with artistic flair and personality. Curated as a range to evoke expression and appeal to the senses. When we think coastal it’s hard not to let our minds lead us to Palm trees and pathways, lighthouses , low lying grasses and lanterns you could image seeing on a boat. However, our coastal exteriors have become a little more refined and we absolutely love it!
How lucky we feel to have the iconic Byron Bay lighthouse walk at our doorstep and the laid-back lifestyle of living on the coast. Yet we know all too well how destructive this harsh environment can be; therefore, we understand this can be a huge contributing factor when looking at exterior lighting for your coastal setting. So much so, we have written a helpful blog all about materiality and the do’s and don’ts for exterior lighting in coastal climates. Read more here.
Coastal environments or coastal style homes can be a very exciting landscape to light and the lighting is essential in creating the perfect coastal hangout.

Wall Lights
This is where our feature lighting and more decorative pieces come into play! From modern brass wall brackets to vintage lanterns this is your opportunity to have some creative freedom and really go with what you love!
Garden Spikes
We have been lucky enough to work on many coastal properties over the years, and it is always exciting to see how creative landscaping can be in framing the coastal houses to their full potential.

Linear pendant lights provide high functionality coupled with a sleek shape making them an increasingly popular option for lighting both home and office spaces. With so many options on the market, there’s guaranteed to be a linear pendant light to suit your every need.
Lumen output
Our customisable linear LED pendants allow you to select the profile and length of your pendant, the wattage, the dimmability and the LED colour. This easy-to-follow guide breaks down all the different points of consideration to keep in mind when making these technical choices.Text
The first thing to take into consideration with a linear LED pendant light is what purpose you wish it to serve within your existing interior space. If you have pre-existing lighting from downlights and/or you would like a linear LED pendant to serve primarily as a decorative feature, then a low wattage option would do the job. (14.4 non dimmable). If the surrounding surfaces are light in colour, this will also help to reflect some of the light, allowing you to settle for a lower wattage option.
On the other hand, if the linear LED pendant will be the primary light source in your space or you require it for task lighting e.g. hanging over a kitchen bench, you might consider going for a stronger wattage (24 Watts) with dimmers in order to give you full control. If your surrounding space is dark in colour e.g a black granite benchtop, this may absorb some of the light output. A higher wattage would, therefore, help to mitigate this issue.
That said, there’s no need to necessarily choose purely between feature or function. Another popular option is an up-down linear pendant in which light is emitted from both the top and the bottom light allowing it to be both a soft feature light and a task light. The uplight has a default wattage of 4.8W to provide ambient lighting whilst the downlight can still be customised to your needs. It comes with two separate integrated drivers into the linear itself. therefore two electrical wires are supplied to allow for two switches in order to turn either the up or down light off separately. Linear LED pendants can create both a stunning decorative feature whilst
maintaining full functionality. In general, tor full control we always recommend opting for 24 watts dimmable in warm or cool white.
The cost of linear LED pendants will vary greatly depending on your desired wattage. This is due to several factors such as the quantity of diodes and the strength of the power gear (driver) needed to run them. If minimising costs is a priority, 14.4Watts is a great option to save a few dollars as it is strong enough to provide enough task lighting for the kitchen without being super bright. You can get away without opting for a dimmable option but if you’re like us and enjoy a glass of wine and a chat around the kitchen bench, then dimmers are essential for full control in creating your preferred mood lighting.
Hot tip: A personal favourite amongst the team is warm white too!
Linear LED pendants come in a wide array of customisable lengths and profiles to suit any project - with our most popular profiles being the slimline, the highside, Dual Shine, and Boxy light.
In terms of length, we always suggest going a touch shorter than the surface that the linear is being hung over (between 150mm-200mm per end) for the following reasons:
-Perfectly matching the length of your kitchen bench or office desk is almost always a recipe for frustration! From experience, we have found that a slightly shorter linear pendant creates the most aesthetically pleasing proportions for the eye.
-Having a slightly shorter linear pendant light also reduces the chances that it can be bumped or knocked around – especially if it is at head height.
Choosing a preferred profile is largely an aesthetic choice. We offer a variety of profile options including squared, highside and slimline as well as a variety of finishes including silver, black and white aluminium and timber.
For a decorative centrepiece in your space, you may decide to opt for a chunkier profile to give your light some ‘weight’ and substance. A slimmer profile would be suitable for those looking for an inconspicuous, streamlined option in a more contemporary setting.
Please note: The wire suspensions should always be installed at least 150mm from each end and should always be installed equal distance apart to ensure longevity. For timber LED pendant lights, we recommend having one wire suspension per metre to avoid warping over time. For example, a timber LED linear of 3 metres would require a wire suspension on either end and one suspension in the middle. Please specify when purchasing should you require additional wire suspensions as these are not included.Text
The ceiling plate provides a neat entry point for the cable to the driver.
Surface Mount Ceiling plates are a standard with any purchase of your Linear. A recessed plate is available in either black, white, or Silver at an additional cost . recessed options are in either square or round shapes.
The recessed ceiling plate features a spring-clip system that slips into your wall for a secure, sturdy and sleek finish. The Surface mounted option on the other hand will protrude from your ceiling by a couple of centimetres and is installed by drilling it into a metal bracket. The Surface mount option will not require as big a hole into your ceiling and is therefore a suitable option for those without remote access into their ceiling.
You can choose whichever ceiling plate option tickles your fancy but the following rule of thumb generally applies: A recessed ceiling plate provides a sleeker finish that will look inconspicuous and blend in more seamlessly to the ceiling for a minimalist effect.
That said, the choice of which ceiling plate to choose is largely dependent on the type of ceiling that it will be installed into. For example, concrete ceilings will require a flush mount ceiling plate which fits over a metal bracket that is drilled onto the roof.
The table below provides a quick summary on how to pick the right Linear LED pendant options to suit your space:
New Column | New Column | New Column | ||
Other functional lights in the space? | Yes | No
Dark Functional Yes – We recommend opting for the dimmable option with higher wattages as this will allow for full control. For example: task lighting can be turned into ambient mood lighting at the dial of a knob. |
How do I install my Linear LED pendant light?
The Linear LED pendant light will come with easy-to-read instructions for installation. Although simple to install, our linear lights must be installed by a qualified electrician.
I don’t have remote access. Are linear LED pendant lights still a suitable option for my home?
The LED Driver is typically installed behind the ceiling, directly above where the linear pendant light hangs. If you are unable to access your ceiling in order to install the LED driver (i.e. you have a concrete ceiling,) you still have a few options depending on your preferred profile. The simplest option would be to choose a linear pendant with a chunkier profile (dual Shine & Highside ) which has the driver concealed inside the aluminium structure. If you are opting for
a highside profile (in which the height is greater than the width) we have several slimmer drivers in lower wattages that could hide inside the aluminium profile.
If you require a higher wattage, you would then need to purchase additional drivers to compensate. Alternatively, it’s possible to install your LED driver in the closest accessible wall (preferably behind the light switch) and then simply run a cable to the pedant’s wire. If you’re installing a linear pendant into a new home, you’re also perfectly capable of hiding your driver neatly into a pantry or closet and running a cable. In the case of the slimline profile, there is, unfortunately, no way to hide a driver within the profile without compromising the integrity of the light source. You would, therefore, require to hide the driver in a nearby wall. That said, there are multiple solutions to the same problem. Feel free to chat with us about your project for a full break-down of all your options.

Hamptons style as we know it is an American interpretation of statement European design styles with influence from Baroque, Rococo and Empire eras. These elements made the perfect building blocks to create one of the most influential design styles that will engulf the interiors of coastal homes throughout the east coast of America.
Hamptons style effortlessly showcases a refined eclectic mix of eras through a neutral colour palette with whites, creams, greys and blues. A layering of textures is almost always present in the soft furnishings while also at times being paired with stripes or florals. The generous proportions and usually large spacious zones typical of the style, bring a sense of calm and beach holiday vibes.
The style really lends its self to Australian homes and in its laidback nature caters to the Australian lifestyle. It can be seen across the nation effortlessly transforming homes from original Queenslanders to new suburban builds.
Like with most styles it is essential to nail the finer details most importantly the lighting. Large and stately pendant lighting in traditional shapes will help ensure the look is complete. Paired with a mix of table and floor lamps to help guarantee the space is well lit without having to be over lit from above.
Wall lights and sconces are extremely popular in helping to refine Hamptons style. It is a lovely soft style of lighting that can help create intimate spaces and bring a relaxed mood.
We have an extensive Hamptons collection that focuses on classic pieces that embody the essence of traditional Hamptons styling. Creating a range that will either evoke contrast in your design or simply compliment and flow with a subtle Hamptons palette. Highlighting relaxed coastal inspired luxury, with panelled glass, mixed metals and textures, this collection is sure to evoke a light and airy feel with the perfect finishing touches for Hamptons inspired design.
Whites, neutrals, yellow and green are all common colours when it coles to Hamptons style interiors. We find pairing warm neutral colours with coastal blues, or layering various shades of blue, from navy through to baby blue works best.
Hamptons style interiors favour natural materials and fabrics for both furniture and homewares. So it is no surprise we see similar trends in Hamptons Style Lighting. The Interior style also takes focus on texture and adding warmth to the home itself by the help of such materials as timber and stone.

In general, our linear LED pendant lights are supplied with:
Our customisable linear LED pendants allow you to select the profile and length of your pendant, the wattage, the dimmability and the LED colour. This easy-to-follow guide breaks down all the different points of consideration to keep in mind when making these technical choices.
1. Feature or function?
2. Budget
3. Profile and Length
Please specify when purchasing should you require additional wire suspensions as these are not included.
4. Let's get technical // choosing a ceiling plate
The ceiling plate provides a neat entry point for the cable to the driver.
Surface Mount Ceiling plates are a standard with any purchase of your Linear. A recessed plate is available in either black, white, or Silver at an additional cost . recessed options are in either square or round shapes.

When it comes to lighting in a bathroom it can seem daunting to get your head around all the do’s and don’ts to make sure you are creating a practical and compliant lighting plan.
This guide outlines the key points and correct steps to create a bathroom lighting plan that will impress your friends but also your Sparky!
First things first, think about your lighting while you are still in the planning stages. Due to the strict zoning regulations that need to be abided by to comply with Australian standards if you don’t consider the key elements you would like in the planning stages, it may be impossible to achieve later.
When you are looking for bathroom inspiration, note the feature lighting elements you like e.g. vanity wall lights, feature pendants, LED strip lighting, and floor lighting and bring this with you to your builder so that these elements can be taken into consideration when planning cabinetry, show placement etc.
Lighting layering is extremely important in your bathroom as it creates an atmosphere and mood to reflect your needs at different times of day or requirement.
General lighting is always required, this is your ceiling lighting, something which you can switch on and illuminate the room as a whole. LED downlights are the perfect fitting to use for your generally light as they are effective and low voltage. If you have an older style home or slab ceiling, a central ceiling light is also a great option for general illumination.
Task lighting in your bathroom is essentially vanity lighting. Like a bench in your kitchen, the vanity is where all the finer tasks are required. Whether this is simply washing your hands, applying makeup, changing contacts, shaving etc. this is where practical task lighting is essential.
LED strip lighting is a great way to incorporate some aesthetic and practical layers into your space. Areas to focus on would be adding backlighting to a mirror, underneath the vanity or shaving cabinets. Other great options include inside shower/shelving niches, a feature wall or inside the shower. Finally you could consider creating cove lighting around the perimeter of the bathroom as indirect general illumination.
Adding a dimmer onto your bathroom lighting is almost essential in our opinion, dimmers are the answer to all your ambient needs. Installing dimming on your general or feature lighting gives you the flexibility to adjust the lumen levels to suit all hours of the day.
Ventilation is extremely important when planning your bathroom renovation. This can be achieved through an extraction fan in areas without windows such as a small powder room
IP Ratings are otherwise known as ‘Ingress Protection Rating’ are used to define levels of sealing effectiveness against foreign bodies such as dirt and moisture.
You will often see IP followed by 2 numbers (IP00), the first number in an IP rating is the level of protection against solids such as dust and the second number indicates the level of protection against water - IP(dust protection level, water protection level).
When only one rating is being addressed generally a letter is substituted, normally an 'x', for example IPx4 is only referencing the moisture rating.
According to the EN 60529 classification system:
Now you know what your IP Rating means its time to talk bathroom zones. Your bathroom is divided into 4 zones. Below is a guide to figure out what zone your light can sit within your bathroom based on your IP Rating.
Zone 0 - Inside the bath or shower. Any lighting used in Zone 0 must have a minimum rating of IP67.
Zone 1 - Above the bath or shower to a height of 2.25m. A minimum rating of IP44 is required.
Zone 2 - The area stretching to 0.6m outside the bath or shower and above the bath and above the bath or shower if over 2.25m. A minimum IP Rating of IP44 is required.
Outside the Zones - Anywhere outside zones 0, 1 & 2. Where water jets are not to be used for cleaning purposes.
We always recommend consulting with your electrician before ordering and installing any light fittings.

Lighting Collection has you covered with this Fan Buying Guide that goes into detail to help you make the right choice when it comes to buying the right fan for your home or interior space. Be the biggest fan, of your fan!
Space
The first thing to consider when purchasing a new fan is what space in your home it will belong to. The type of fan and its blade size are all dependent upon the room and what purpose you wish it to serve. The larger the room, the larger the blade length and motor size in order to move a greater amount of air. A particularly important consideration to take into account is whether the length of the blades will obstruct any pre-existing lighting in the room as this will cause an undesirable strobing effect.
Performance
A fan’s overall performance is measured by its speed, energy usage, airflow volume and efficiency.
Each factor on its own does not guarantee an efficient fan. For example, a high fan speed does not necessarily equate to a high airflow volume. If you are looking for a fan for large spaces, generally choose one with longer blades and that generally have a lower RPMs : meaning that it will move large quantities of air without necessarily having that ‘breeze’ feeling. If you’re looking for something for smaller rooms, like above the bed in your bedroom than opt for a smaller option with high RPMs and one of our fans with a sloped blade pitch for maximum ‘breeze’.
AC or DC?
Fans come in two different kinds of motors – AC and DC. In general, DC fans are considered a superior choice in terms of energy consumption as they use up to 70% less energy than AC fans. That said, the AC fans generally have a cheaper price point as they require less parts and for this reason are generally considered a tried and tested, and reliable choice. AC run 50 hertz that run constantly on a rotating electromagnet. AC have a standard 3 speed option for your control. A DC motor runs on pulses of energy in an electromagnetic flow therefore not constantly running off electricity to provide a constant rotation. The smaller engineered motor allows it to have multiple speeds and timers, including spinning in reverse and gives the operator full control.
Remote controls
AC Motor controlled fans come with a standard three speed wall switch, This allows you to also have the option of purchasing an additional mi smart remote control which provides three fan speeds, light control and light dimming support. The Mi smart remote features a magnetized backing meaning you can take it around the room with you and then slide it back in place on the wall. The Mi Smart app is also available freely for controlling your fan and light directly from your smartphone.Buy the Bluetooth Mi Remote and you can have full control from your phone anywhere in the house the Smart app allows control of your fan and light directly from your smartphone.
DC motor controlled fans will always come with a readily available remote control specifically designed for your fan. Multiple speed options available, reverse option and timer settings. All provided in one remote to be easily attached to a bracket on your wall next to your light switch. As your DC motor fan comes with a remote - no additional fan switch is needed (unless specified)

How do I know track lighting is the right choice for my space?
There are three considerations when deciding if track lighting is right for your space: Necessity, requirement and of course design/form. Firstly, let necessity guide you. When you have concrete or low ceilings and minimal recess then track lighting can be the ideal solution to brighten your space. Track lighting is best to install on exposed beams in spaces with pitched roofs. The requirement will also help determine when to use track lighting, perfect for highlighting features or specifically highlighting designated areas. It's a great solution for gallery lighting, also for shop or café fit-outs. Finally, you need to love the look and the design/form of track lighting.. If you do, then go for it!

- What is your favourite form of indirect?
As a Landscape Designer over the years, I have always used subdued lighting for soft landscaping throughout foliage. Though I am finding over the years, as entertaining spaces become less about large planted gardens and more about ‘Hardscaping’ & that these areas require more ‘Accent Lighting’ to highlight features such as Stone walls, tiled steps, ornate pots, built in bench seating just to name a few! You only need a few outdoor ‘Accent Lights’, as you don’t want to overwhelm a small space with lighting.
- Why is it integral to your design?
Lighting outdoors serves not only aesthetic but also practical purposes for gardens at night. It provides ambient light for evening entertaining, highlighting special features, water, stone & plants by adding creative dimensions to even small spaces. Mostly it allows you to enjoy the outdoor spaces during the day but also at night creating inviting views from indoors as well as out.
- An example of indirect lighting in one of your designs?
In this garden design, the lighting was considered in the very early stages as I had designed a feature oversized day bed seat in the pool area that needed not only night lighting but a large light that would balance the sheer size of the seating itself without resulting in an excess of over-illumination! I used some delicate Antique Brass Eye Lid Wall lights on the face of the seat to compliment the brass Lighting above.
- Fav product from our collection?
The Brass Gooseneck exterior wall light is one of my absolute favourites. The beauty and effect are conspicuous in the form of the fitting itself. The stylish Ornamental Gooseneck fitting constructed from Solid Brass, not only make this a durable exterior light but a grand statement or any home or garden.

IP Ratings
IP Ratings are otherwise known as ‘Ingress Protection Rating’ are used to define levels of sealing effectiveness against foreign bodies such as dirt and moisture.
You will often see IP followed by 2 numbers (IP00), the first number in an IP rating is the level of protection against solids such as dust and the second number indicates the level of protection against water. EG: IP(dust protection level, water protection level). Sometimes there is the third digit is used normally an ‘x’. This is when only one rating is being addressed. Eg: IPx4 is only referencing the moisture rating.
According to the EN 60529 classification system:
Solids Rating:
0 - No protection.
1 - Protected against solid objects over 50mm in size. Eg: Large tools.
2 - Protected against solid objects over 12mm in size. Eg: Fingers.
3 - Protected against solid objects over 2.5mm in size. Eg: Wires and small tools.
4 - Protected against solid objects over 1mm in size. Eg: Wires and bugs.
5 - Limited protection against dust ingress. Harmful amounts can't get in.
6 - Protected against dust ingress. Dust can’t get in!
Moisture Rating:
0 - No protection
1 - Protected against vertically falling drops of water.
2 - Protected against direct sprays of water with light tilted 15 degrees from vertical light rain.
3 - Protected against direct sprays of water with light tilted 60 degrees from vertical strong rain.
4 - Protected against sprays of water from all directions. Gentle spray with a hosepipe.
5 - Protected against strong jets of water from all directions. Strong spray with the hose pipe.
6 - Protected against strong jets of water from all directions. Cleaning with a high-pressure hose.
7 - Protected again temporary immersion in water no deeper than 50cm. Eg: Flood
8 - Protected against continuous immersion in water no deeper than 100cm. Eg: Pool light
For example, an IP Rating of IP65 will be protected against dust ingress and strong jets of water from all directions.
Bathroom Zoning
Now you know what your IP Rating means its time to talk bathroom zones. Your bathroom is divided into 4 zones. Below is a guide to figure out what zone your light can sit within your bathroom based on your IP Rating.

We always recommend consulting with your electrician if unsure prior to ordering your light and installing your fittings.
We love a void and what’s not to love! The grandeur, the light and airy feeling they can bring but best of all the canvas they produce to create beautiful art pieces in this space. Without doubt one for the best mediums is lighting! Void in essence refers to a completely empty space but where is the fun in that? By using lighting not only does it give you the opportunity to pick something bold, but the lighting helps add a warm yet captivating layer to your space.
Some voids are more delicate and may suit a cluster of smaller pieces. This option can be just as impactful and create complex and alluring installations.
Voids can become the perfect space to showcase the most decorative and sculptural of pendants lighting. If the void is large enough this can be the perfect opportunity to make a big statement.
A void is typically utilised in double storey homes, whereby the flooring between the lower and upper floor is removed and allowing the perfect entry for stairwells or can be a built-in features to create grandeur in an entry way. Lighting hung low in these instances can help to lower the ceiling height over service areas such as dining table. Voids are great but at times a key feature piece maybe required to help tie the area together.
One of our favourite aspects of a well-placed void is their ability to flood light throughout a space. Why not help it along with some beautiful placed lighting? Voids provide the opportunity to have a bit of fun and go with something that you really love, there is no right or wrong but boy there sure are a lot of great options.
Mid Century modern, you might not know all the ins and outs surrounding what it actually is however even without being a guru on the subject you will be surprised with how much mid-century modern furniture and influence is staring you right in face!
Without a doubt its safe to say that world is obsessed with Mid Century modern design and the Lighting Collective family could not be happier about it
Mid-century modern is a design style which originated around 1945-1975. With new materials such as plastic, laminate, polyurethane, plywood and synthetic fibres at the ready, functional new world designs started to emerge. Designers followed the theory “form follows function” and started to create modern furniture pieces that would stand the test of time and win the hearts of the people up until today!
When it came to lighting, designers focused their attention to organic shapes and sculptural objects. The combination of contrasting materials and the influence of post war lead to experimental designs with bold shapes and profiles with the abundance of new materials at their fingertips.
Mid-century modern wall lights, pendant light, floor and table lamps started to emerge from this period and some of which are still being made today! Below are some of our favourite signature pieces from adored designers during this movement.
Lighting fixtures ooze a mid-century modern style. Seemingly floating throughout the space, they create an immersive and playful atmosphere. The integration of high ceilings in the common areas teamed with brass rod pendants help to build grandeur and evoke an Americana/luxe feel.

Living in Australia it’s safe to say most of us have experienced a day at the beach, with the sand between our toes and that fresh salty air sticking to our skin. As much as its all fun and games having a day at the beach and enjoying the sunshine, could you imagine being left outside in one sedentary position all day and all night rain, hail or shine? That is exactly what your light fittings will be doing! Let’s think about them for a second while we consider our design needs.
As far as lighting goes, you will hear the term “marine grade” being thrown around, especially when you hand your plans over to the electrician and he checks your site location to read 123 the Esplanade! Here at Lighting Collective it is an all too familiar story and with the ocean right at our doorstep we thought it would be good to break down some of the other materials you can use in coastal areas aside from the classic “marine grade” and that can also withstand these extreme environments.
Brass is a fantastic material and one of our favourites here at Lighting Collective. Brass is an alloy which is comprised of copper and zinc. It has excellent corrosive resistance properties and is very malleable, which makes it easily machined into a variety of shapes and can come in a range of different finishes.
While we all love the shiny gold finish of brass, this material also has the charm of being “the gift that keeps on giving”. Over time it will naturally start to oxidise, resulting in tarnish on the metal, which is referred to as patina. This helps to shield the brass from corrosion and gives it an aged look. Patina also acts as a protective layer which is what makes it such a durable material to use in coastal applications.
Overall, brass is great material to use in coastal environments and it will adapt and change its appearance over time which gives it a certain uniqueness however, it will require a little TLC to keep up its shiny appearance if that’s the look you are after.
Copper is another enduring material that is favoured here at Lighting Collective and for good reason. Copper is a natural resource and is one of the most hard-wearing materials on the market. It can easily withstand anything that the coastal environment can throw at it without rust or rot or becoming brittle from prolonged sun exposure.
Similar to brass and bronze, copper will naturally oxidise over time with exposure to atmospheric elements such as oxygen, rain, carbon dioxide and other sulphur bearing compounds. These elements will tarnish the natural copper and develop a protective patina layer. Copper can take years to develop what's called the verdigris patina, especially in dry climates.
Unlike brass and bronze, only specific cleaners should be used on your copper fittings if you want to keep them in their natural state. However, this can be A LOT of maintenance so I would advise to only select a copper fitting if you are happy with all stages of the ageing process, and let’s face it, it is a beautiful thing to age gracefully!
Overall, copper is a hearty metal and will not rust when left to the elements, although it will adapt with its environment and age accordingly to protect itself.
Concrete, our friend, our saviour! What can I say, concrete is the golden child when it comes to coastal applications. It is the most commonly used man-made material on earth so why not incorporate it into your lighting. Concrete is a composite material which is comprised of cement, water and aggregate. Mixed together they create a beautiful paste which is then poured and hardened over time.
Concrete is extremely resistant and as it is not a metal it will not get effected by rust, corrosion, oxidisation or any type of rot. The sun and UV rays will not make it brittle and it is not affected by moisture, earning its position as the coastal “golden child” of materials. As far as long-lasting materials go, concrete is low maintenance and my top pick for coastal applications. The best part? You can paint it to match in with any design as well.
Overall Concrete is a fantastic material to use in coastal environments as it is content with neglect and the low maintenance lifestyle.
Stainless steel is an alloy composed primarily of iron. There are many different grades of stainless steel, thousands in fact. However, we are going to focus on marine grade 316.
Stainless steel 316 is valued for its anti-corrosive properties, making it a great material to use around your coastal property. Along with many other ingredients it contains chromium, which gives its anti-corrosive properties.
The chromium in 316 does oxidise over time which is where you might see the stainless steel start to tarnish but it is only a very thin layer and in fact, acts as a barrier against further oxidisation and corrosion. This can be removed by cleaning the metal with a stainless-steel cleaner to restore its natural beauty.
Overall stainless steel 316 or Marine Grade stainless is a great metal for coastal environments as it will withstand the test of time. It will need a little maintenance though if you want to keep it nice and shiny new looking.
When it comes to light fittings, aluminium takes the cake for popularity. Why? Aluminium is a cost-effective material which is soft, lightweight with a low density and the ability to resist corrosion – the trifecta.
Aluminium comes in varying grades, some which have higher corrosion resistance properties than others. That being said, aluminium is susceptible to corrosion from chloride, AKA Sodium Chloride aka SALT! Because of this, manufactures will apply a protective coating on their fittings to protect the aluminium from oxidation and salt corrosion. The three most popular protective coatings are paint, powder coating and anodizing.
Paint is suitable for non-coastal areas and preferably interior use. It is susceptible to chipping and if the natural material is exposed it has the possibility to oxidise due to air exposure.
Powder coating is a fantastic way to protect aluminium for external use and coastal areas. There are also varying ways to powder coat, some which are more durable than others. As with paint, there is the possibility of scratching. If damage occurs it will require immediate attention otherwise the material will be susceptible to corrosion.
Anodized aluminium is corrosion resistant from chloride however it is subject to galvanic corrosion. Galvanic corrosion occurs when the aluminium encounters other metals such as copper and steel. So, it is best to isolate your anodized fittings or group them with others alike.
Overall, aluminium is a great material for coastal environments when covered by a protective layer. Not all aluminium products are suitable for coastal applications so when choosing from our range, make sure you select the aluminium fittings in our coastal grade collection.
Some other great options to use when looking at materials for your coastal project are glass, poly-carbonates and galvanised materials.
Glass is a great choice as it is extremely low maintenance and will not be effected by external elements. Just keep in mind that the back plates or other components used on a glass fitting are suitable for coastal areas as well otherwise you may find these parts will start to degrade while the glass stays in perfect condition.
As poly-carbonates are not metals they will not experience the common issues of rust, rot or corrosion. That said, some plastics can become brittle when subject to UV rays and long sun exposure.
Galvanised is another hearty material which will withstand a coastal application. This again comes in varying grades so please check out our coastal collection to see what suits your specific needs.

Whether you're renovating your bathroom or building a new one, there are a couple of factors to consider when choosing your bathroom lighting. IP ratings, bathroom zoning, shadows and not to mention styling are all important considerations! All of these factors can make lighting your bathroom a bit of a challenge. So, we have mapped out all the things you need to consider.
IP Rating & Bathroom Zoning
Fist lets get our technical talk out of the way and understand ‘Ip Ratings’ otherwise known as ‘Ingress Protection Rating’. These are used to define levels of sealing effectiveness against foreign bodies such as dirt and moisture. Your IP Rating then determines what zone of the bathroom your light fitting can sit. Click here for your Guide To IP Ratings & Bathroom Zoning.
Illumination Styling & Placement
Now we have those pesky technical considerations out of the way we can talk illumination, styling and placement! Ideal bathroom lighting eliminates shadows, provides task lighting and and with combined decorative lighting creates an ambient relaxing atmosphere. Popular lights for the bathroom are vanity lights, wall lights, pendant lights, downlights and if you want to get creative using outdoor step lights as shower lights can create a unique look!
First, let's talk about the bathroom vanity. The vanity is used for tasks such as grooming and makeup application so vanity lights require bright and colour accurate task lighting. It is best to choose a light bulb or light source that provides light with a high lumen output to eliminate shadows around the mirror. A popular choice for vanity lighting is bathroom wall sconces placed either side or above the mirror. Not only do they have a stylish appeal but also provide the functionality that is required. If you would like more information on picking the right light bulb check out our 5 factor Guide To Choosing The Right Globe.

Ceiling lights are your overall task light source for the bathroom and may determine the mood of the space. This type of light sends light downward onto the tops of surfaces. Downlight's are a great choice if you don't want attention drawn to the ceiling. They cast a lot of light are a great minimal style choice. Try angling them toward the mirror so light is reflecting back on to your face.

Pendant lights are a great focal point for the room and are a decorative choice adding warmth and depth to a space. Make sure to consider height! When installing your pendant light too low they won't cast adequate light and too high they might go unnoticed. Pendant lights are normally combined with ceiling lights offering combined lighting. We recommend using an ambient light bulb rather than a bright (or high lumen output) light bulb. Please note, if choosing pendant lights for use over a bath tub or sink you may require a 12-volt light source. We have a selection of 12-volt pendants and some of our range can be paired with a 12-volt transformer. Please get in contact with our friendly team for further information.
