Tell us a bit about Alida and Miller?
We are a mother/daughter duo, that live and work in the Bangalow/Byron Bay area, and anywhere else we get asked. The story behind our name is Alida is Kit's middle name, and Miller is my son middle name. We began in 2013 when Kit left the Fashion Styling Industry, to come and work with me (I say I am her boss, but Kit reckons she's my business partner). With humble beginnings, we started at my dining room table with just the 2 of us. We now work from our home office and expanded to a team of many! With our own in-house stylists, carpenters, tilers, landscape gardeners, handymen etc. And in between, Kit has had 2 little boys that we now juggle between work sites and meetings.
We love all your projects! A particular favourite of ours is Wizards Mountain, can you tell us about the project?
Wizard Mountain is a Ranbuild Shed, that has been turned into an amazing home. The lighting was tough to get right, as the ceiling height is over 4 meters, and living room, dining room, and kitchen are all in the same space., but we wanted each area to be defined as a kitchen, living room and dining room, and that's where the lighting came in. Each space has its own individual lighting, but as one large space, every pendant light complements the other.
What are your considerations when looking for lighting, and how do you match that to your desired style?
Our biggest consideration when choosing lighting is our clients brief. Most of our clients are very savvy to design, and know what they want, especially when it comes to lighting. They usually know where they want their lights for each room, but, turn to us for the design of the light. We try to match each lighting fixture to each room by keeping in mind: The period of the house, location, clients tastes, and cost. In Byron, most clients like to go with the cane or rattan pendant look for example. Lately, we are seeing clients wanting a brass finish ( e.g. light next to the pink door ) And wall lights have become very popular, particularly in bathrooms on either side of the mirror.
How do lights improve a space?
We believe that lighting is one of the most important elements in interior design, if you get that right, the whole room will shine. Lighting can bring a mood instantly into a room with just a flick of a switch, form dimmer lights in a nursery for sleep time, to outside lighting on a swimming pool at night, that makes a dip seem incredibly inviting. Lighting is one of the first things you will see when you walk into a room, if there is a chandelier or oversized pendant hanging from the ceiling e.g. Wizards Mountain, you can't help but look up. And with life in general, you need light, whether it's for aesthetic or practical reasons, without lighting, you are literally in the dark.
