Ascher Smith - Stylist Spotlight

As we say goodbye to quite an unpredictable, tumultuous, rollercoaster ride that was 2020, we look timidly optimistic to 2021 and wonder what it holds for us all. One thing is for sure, it looks like international travel may be off the cards for some time and if you’re not spending your saved pennies exploring Australia’s backyard, you are deciding to revamp your own, creating your own little slice of outdoor heaven. Not only has Ascher Smith shared with us the trends she sees up and coming for 2021, but some of her tips and tricks to create the most liveable outdoor area. How lucky are we!

Outdoor living

Us Aussies love our outdoors and one of the biggest things I am seeing is bringing nearly every room to the outdoors to make the most of our glorious summer days.

Some simple ways to bring living areas to the outdoors

  • Comfortable Quality Outdoor Furniture
  • Outdoor lighting, whether its Vintage festoon lights, outdoor wall lights or even candles for a soft ambience
  • Homewares – Outdoor Coffee tables with vases, throw rugs, outdoor rugs…its all helps soften any courtyard and turns it into an outdoor living room!

White & Green colour scheme – plain, simple and aesthetically pleasing

Less is more… when it comes to colour schemes outside, I am seeing more and more people embrace the simplistic look and really feeling in to the whites, greens and charcoals.

This not only is a low maintenance renovation look, it has CHIC written all over it.

Some different ways to style these colours

  • I always try to consider a fresh white canvas behind the green plant foliage to really make it a feature
  • White pots with lush green foliage spilling out of them
  • White batten screening or a white open plan arbor with green vines growing over it for dappled summer shade

Indoor jungle

Indoor plants, need I say more?! This trend has taken the world by storm. Whether it’s the very hard (and tough to kill) ‘mother in laws tongue’ or something a bit more tropical requiring a little bit more care, home around the globe are filling up with indoor plants and creating beautiful indoor jungles. Here are some more hardy indoor plants to try:

Here are some indoor plants that you can’t kill (Easily!)

Philodendron Monstera…My all time fav!

Philodendron Heart Leaf vine…let it spill out from a pot up high!

Draceana Marginata…An oldy but a goody!

Veggie gardens incorporated into chic design

Sustainability is the new black!

Creating a styling veggie garden not only pleases the eye, but also the taste buds (and digestive system). Today we are becoming more and more conscious of what we are putting in our bodies, and it’s often been thought that you can either have a stylish landscape area OR you have a veggie patch… well I say why not have BOTH!

Tips to make veggie patch look stylish?

  • Use a timeless outdoor material to clad your raised veggie beds such as timber, Corten Steel or Scyon Cladding
  • Consider formed concrete planters at assorted heights for something different!
