Track lighting is one of the most flexible ceiling lighting solutions available. Surface-mounted metal rails support multiple adjustable fixtures, making it easy to direct light exactly where it's needed. Systems can be cut to length, joined in different configurations, and expanded over time.

The main systems (H-Track, J-Track and L-Track) use different wiring configurations and profiles, so track and track heads need to be from the same system to work together. If you're planning a track lighting layout, it's best to settle on one standard for the whole project.

Single-circuit track runs all the lights on that run from one switch or dimmer, which suits most residential spaces. Three-circuit track lets you group lights on the same run onto separate switches — useful in open-plan homes or commercial fitouts where you want task, ambient and accent lighting controlled independently.

A general starting point is around three track heads per metre, spaced roughly 30cm apart, which gives even coverage without dark spots. The right number will still depend on the brightness of the heads you choose and what the space is used for.
