How To Choose Your Feature Linear Pendant

Our Guide

Linear pendant lights are more than just a lighting solution—they’re a design feature that can bring structure, sophistication, and purpose to a space. With their streamlined profiles and ability to span wide surfaces, linear pendants suit everything from refined residential kitchens to bold commercial interiors. Whether you're specifying for a home or hospitality venue, there's a linear pendant to meet your lighting and aesthetic needs.

Feature or Function?

The first step is determining how your linear pendant will be used within the space.

Looking to make a statement? Choose from our Feature Linear Collection. These designs are made to stand out—ideal when ambient lighting is already present through downlights or wall fittings. They're perfect for projects where the pendant adds a sculptural or stylistic moment.

Need a strong, practical light source? Our Standard LED Linear Pendants are engineered for performance. These options are best for task-oriented zones—such as kitchen islands, office desks, or bar counters—where uniform lighting is essential.

If you're still unsure which option suits your space best, our blog Our Guide To Choosing Standard Linear Pendants offers helpful guidance and inspiration.

Consider your layout and space

Linear pendants work best when aligned with the proportions of the space. As a rule of thumb:

For kitchen islands or dining tables, the pendant should span approximately 60–80% of the width of the surface.

For open-plan areas, consider how the pendant interacts with surrounding fittings or architectural lines—choose a piece that harmonises with your overall spatial rhythm.

Ensure sufficient clearance: hang your pendant approximately 700–850 mm above a benchtop or table surface. For commercial spaces or higher ceilings, adjustments can be made while maintaining visual balance.

Materials

Finish and material influence not only the style but also the feel of the light emitted.

Metal finishes add modernity and directionality, focusing light downwards.

Glass shades help diffuse light softly - ideal for ambient illumination.

Timber, linen or natural materials introduce warmth and can soften contemporary lines, but may require consideration in high-use or humid environments.

Mixing materials across fittings in an open space? Linear pendants can act as the anchor—tying everything together or contrasting deliberately for effect.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I install my linear pendant light?

Each fitting includes straightforward installation instructions. However, all of our pendants must be installed by a qualified electrician to ensure proper setup and safety.

What if I don’t have ceiling access or room for a driver?

If ceiling access is limited or there's insufficient space to house a remote driver, look for models with integrated drivers, they're designed for cleaner installations in challenging spaces.

Can I customise the length of my pendant?

Yes—many of our linear pendants can be customised in length (even beyond 3M), finish, or configuration. Contact our customer service team for tailored options to suit your project.

Are your LED linear pendants dimmable?

Most of our LED pendants are dimmable. You’ll find this info in the spec tables of each listing. Need compatibility with DALI, 1–10V, or C-Bus? Reach out to our team for compatible fittings.

What length should I choose for my surface?

As a general rule, select a pendant that’s 300–400mm shorter than the surface it will hang above—leaving 150–200mm of clearance at each end for visual balance.

How high should I hang my linear pendant above a benchtop or table?

We recommend positioning it between 700–850mm from the surface, but this may vary based on ceiling height and pendant design. For very high ceilings, you may need to adjust proportionally.

Can I use linear pendants in commercial spaces?

Absolutely. Linear pendants are ideal for hospitality, retail, and corporate spaces thanks to their architectural form, scalability, and focused lighting options.
