Common Questions About Ceiling Lights and Downlights

A surface mounted ceiling light is installed directly onto the face of the ceiling, making the fixture a visible part of the interior design and decor. In contrast, a recessed downlight is built into the ceiling cavity to provide a streamlined, minimalist appearance where the light source remains flush with the surface.

Selecting the right colour temperature depends on the intended mood and functionality of the room, with warm white (2200K - 3000K) often preferred for relaxed areas like lounges and bedrooms. For task-oriented spaces such as kitchens or laundries, a cool white (3000K+) may be more effective for providing clarity and focus.

The number of fixtures required depends on the ceiling height, the beam angle of the chosen lights, and the specific dimensions of the area. Generally, spacing units approximately 1.5 to 2 metres apart ensures an even distribution of light without creating excessive glare or dark corners.

While most modern LED fixtures are designed to be dimmable, they often require a specific trailing-edge dimmer to ensure smooth operation and longevity. It is always best to verify that the light component and the wall switch are compatible to avoid issues such as flickering or buzzing during use.

Adjustable or "gimbal" downlights allow the beam to be tilted, which is ideal for highlighting architectural features, artwork, or specific work surfaces. Fixed downlights are better suited for general ambient lighting where a consistent, downward vertical beam is required across the entire floor plan.
