Frequent Questions about Lighting A Kitchen

Great kitchen lighting relies on four layers. Ambient kitchen lighting (downlights or ceiling fixtures) forms the foundation and evenly illuminates the room. Task kitchen lights provide focused light over benchtops and sinks. Accent lighting — LED strips under kickboards or adjustable spotlights — adds depth to shelving and features. Finally, decorative kitchen pendants, sconces, or chandeliers act as the "jewellery" of the space, adding personality and serving as a design focal point.

Spacing and height are everything with kitchen pendant lights. Position multiple pendants 600–750mm apart, at least 200mm from the bench edge, and hang them 750–900mm above the benchtop. This ensures even light distribution without the fixtures feeling too imposing — and is what separates a polished, well-designed kitchen from one that feels off-balance.

A kitchen island linear pendant suits long benchtops where a cleaner, more streamlined look is preferred. The key rule is that the linear should be roughly 200mm shorter than the island on each side — so a 2m island calls for a 1.6m linear. Linears work especially well in contemporary or minimalist kitchens where a row of individual pendants might feel too busy.

The material of your kitchen lights shapes the entire feel of the space. Glass is timeless and suits most styles without feeling heavy. Ceramic adds artisanal warmth and texture. Rattan brings an organic, coastal or Scandi vibe. Concrete delivers a sleek industrial edge, while timber creates an earthy, warm mood. Match your fixture material to your existing cabinetry and finishes for a cohesive result.

Position task kitchen lights — downlights, track lights, or pendants — directly over your work surfaces to avoid working in your own shadow. Under-cabinet lighting is especially effective for benchtop areas. On reflective surfaces like stainless steel or granite, swap bright overhead task lights for a softer, diffused wall light to avoid uncomfortable glare. When in doubt, consult a certified electrician before purchasing to get placement right from the start.
