Project Feature | Dune by Graya x Arlo Stone

Nestled in the picturesque hills of Burleigh Heads, Dune captures the essence of coastal luxury with sweeping ocean views and elevated decor. An exquisite project by GRAYA, it is a bold example of Mediterranean design brought to life through the use of stone details and organic lighting. Fossil Coral lighting adorns the walls and ceilings througout the project, these fixtures are imprinted with intircate patterns and textures signature only to fossilised stone. Adding an organic and distinctive touch to the interior and exterior.

Inspired by Moroccan architecture, this four-storey residence is shaped by terracotta arches, rustic textures and calming peach tones to create a space that is both serene and awe-inspring. Every aspect of the home has been meticulously crafted to embrace both expansive indoor and outdoor living, integral to Mediterranean style, from the spacious living areas to the organic stone finishes. With five bedrooms, six bathrooms, and an array of high-end amenities - such as a wine cellar, gym, rooftop bar and 17-metre floating pool, Dune offers the ultimate in comfort and luxury.
In this exclusive interview with Josh Dzufer, Director at Arlo Stone, the masterminds behind the gorgeous stone within Dune, we explore how to incorporate Mediterranean style into your home. From the rich, warm tones of travertine to the ornamental designs inspired by Moroccan craftsmanship, we'll share expert insights on selecting the right materials, finishes, and textures that make a Mediterranean home feel both luxurious and inviting.

The unique and inconsistent shapes of the crazy pave is what really sets the tone for the Europe influenced design palette. The shapes quietly add interest and texture while staying muted in large areas.

What types of stone did you use for the Dune project, and how do they capture the essence of Mediterranean style/design?

Dune committed to using one Travertine flooring product throughout – Almond Travertine Crazy Pave. This product was selected due to its sandy, neutral warm tones that it carries paired with the traditional pitting characteristics of Travertine adding texture & interest. Travertine is a widely used material in Europe and particularly Morocco.

How do you see stone influencing the ambiance and feel of a Mediterranean-inspired space?

Travertine has a way of creating a subtle warmth to a space. Not only does it bring creamy and beige tones that immediately provide a sense of home – but also a sense of luxury. The unique and inconsistent shapes of the crazy pave is what really sets the tone for the Europe influenced design palette. The shapes quietly add interest and texture while staying muted in large areas.

Could you share your approach to selecting stone colours, textures, and finishes that enhance a Mediterranean aesthetic?

Dune's entranceway immediately showcases the home's architectural prowess. When embarking on this project, the brief was a coastal getaway - so we went for a coastal Moroccan theme.

One of the important elements that helped bring that feeling into the house was the unique decision to surface the floors internally andexternally with crazy pave, we felt like it gave an important introduction to the overall design theme. Complimenting the natural travertine crazy pave is sweeping curves, natural stone finishes, and wall-to-wall peach fuzz render that are now hallmarks of DUNE’s sculptural design.

How do you balance the raw beauty of natural stone with the refined elegance expected in luxury Mediterranean designs?

When selecting the Natural stone finishes for DUNE, Travertine was the obvious choice. Not only does it ooze luxury, but it is also timeless with a vein characteristic like no other. Almost reminiscent of Morocco's harsh landscape, the Travertine tones are warm and inviting, making you feel at home while immersed in luxury.

What role does stone play in creating a cohesive connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces typical of Mediterranean homes?

Each suite embodies the charm of an old school guest house, restored to feel like a private home. We want you to feel a sense of stepping back in time, to feel the beauty of the spaces and the magic of the incredible nature that frames you. Natural Stone finishes are popular for all surfaces – floors, walls, kitchen, bathrooms & more.

It’s special when you commit to one surface, like DUNE’s Arlo Almond Travertine Crazy Pave and run it throughout internally & externally. Not only does this create a cohesive connection between the inside & outside, it provides luxury under foot from the renowned soft travertine feel & finish. Using a product like the inconsistently sized crazy pave, you have brought Morocco to you using native materials to surface and finish the home.

What advice would you give to designers or homeowners looking to incorporate Mediterranean style into their projects using stone?

When selecting materials that stay true to a Mediterranean style design, softness and curves should abound throughout the home with a warm, European style colour palette like rich renders & paints, as well as Travertine Crazy Pave, tiles & slabs. Select fewer materials and commit to using them consistently throughout the home. Have the interior & exterior flooring dominated with the Arlo Almond Crazy Pave to bring the outdoors in, and the terracotta coloured walls & ceiling providing the classic cozy feel.

Incorporating natural stone is a thoughtful way to add Mediterranean design into your space. From the rich tones of travertine to the organic imprints of fossilised coral, stone adds depth and character. Its organic textures and earthy hues create a sense of balance and connection, resulting in a home that feels both grounded and timeless.
