Frequent Questions About Coastal Grade Lighting

Even if you cannot see the ocean, salt-laden air can still settle on metal, timber, and outdoor fixtures - so if you live within 5km of the coast, there can be a moderate risk of corrosion of standard materials, and it is definitely worthwhile considering coastal-rated fittings. The closer you live to the ocean, the higher this risk gets. For example, if you live anywhere within 500m of the coast, this is a very high-risk area and specialist coastal-grade fittings are an absolute must.

Standard metals often lack the necessary protective coatings or alloys to combat the high salt content and humidity carried by sea breezes. When exposed to these coastal elements, the materials quickly succumb to oxidation and begin to degrade or peel.

High-quality die-cast aluminium performs exceptionally well when treated with a UV-stabilised powder coating. This specialised finish acts as a resilient seal, preventing moisture and salt from penetrating the metal and causing oxidation. Note that not all powder coating is equal, so check that the fitting is specifically warranted for coastal application.

Solid brass naturally develops a beautiful, protective patina when exposed to the elements, rather than flaking or peeling like inferior plated metals. This dense alloy effectively heals itself, offering an incredibly durable and classic aesthetic for coastal properties.

Glass and UV-stabilised polycarbonates are excellent, corrosion-free alternatives because the materials do not contain metals that can rust or rot. However, it is essential that all internal components and mounting hardware are also constructed from marine-grade materials to ensure complete longevity.
